A good night’s sleep often begins long before your head reaches the pillow. For many people, the problem isn’t simply that they don’t spend enough time in bed. The hours leading up to bedtime can be filled with work, screens, caffeine, heavy meals, exercise, notifications and the general mental noise of everyday life. That makes an evening routine more than a lifestyle trend. It can be a practical way of creating a consistent transition between being alert during the day and preparing for sleep at night. The good news is that a useful routine doesn’t need to involve expensive gadgets or a complicated list of supplements. A few consistent habits can make the final part of your day considerably more conducive to rest. Why the Hour Before Bed Matters Your body doesn’t instantly switch from “awake” to “asleep.” Sleep is influenced by a combination of biological rhythms, accumulated sleep pressure and environmental cues. Light exposure, activity, temperature, food, caffeine and mental stimulation can all influence how ready you feel for bed. That’s why suddenly deciding to sleep at 10 p.m. after working on a laptop until 9:59 p.m. may not produce the result you want. An evening routine provides a transition. Instead of expecting your brain to go from emails and deadlines directly into sleep, you gradually reduce stimulation and repeat a sequence of familiar behaviours. Over time, those behaviours can become cues that the day is ending. 1. Set a Consistent Time to Start Winding Down You don’t necessarily need a strict bedtime routine that starts at the exact same minute every night. A more realistic goal is to establish a general period when you stop doing demanding activities. For example, if you normally go to bed at 10:30 p.m., you could make 9:30 p.m. the beginning of your wind-down period. That might mean: The specific activities aren’t as important as creating a predictable transition. This is also why trying to overhaul your entire evening at once can backfire. If a routine requires 45 minutes of meditation, an hour without your phone, a cold shower, journaling and six different supplements, there’s a reasonable chance you’ll abandon it after a week. Simple routines are easier to maintain. 2. Give Your Brain a Break From Work…
